How is this linked to Equity and Inclusion?
CEs/CEUs:
This course is .20 RID PS and BEI GS CEUs. Please submit any forms for other accrediting agencies.
This .20 CEU (RID PS/ BEI GS) course will explain what burnout is, the signs and symptoms of burnout, why burnout is more common in modern society, and will provide practical strategies to manage and prevent burnout. The term “burnout” was coined in the 1970s by the American psychologist Herbert Freudenberger. He used it to describe the consequences of severe stress and high ideals in “helping” professions. As interpreters we can easily be affected by burnout. How can we maintain our professional ideals in our careers without experiencing burnout?
Additional info:
Burnout is closely linked to diversity, equity, and inclusion because marginalized groups often face unequal workloads, emotional labor, and systemic barriers that increase stress. Lack of inclusive environments can make these individuals feel undervalued, isolated, and overworked, while limited access to culturally responsive mental health resources further exacerbates burnout. Addressing burnout through a DEI lens ensures that all individuals are supported and valued, promoting resilience and well-being across diverse groups.
1) Identify signs and symptoms of burnout.
2) Express whether or not they have experienced burnout and why?
3) Reflect on ways to manage and prevent burnout.
